Liver transplantation conducted successfully for the first time in Nepal

A liver transplantation has been conducted successfully for the first time in Nepal.An 8-hour-long successful surgery was carried out by a 14-member team led by Korean Dr Debhina Kohn at Human

Organ Transplant Center in Bhaktapur on Wednesday.The operation began at 12 noon until 8pm, one of the doctors involved in the operation told Republica Online. Health Minister Gagan Thapa said that it is a great achievement in the field of Nepal’s health sector. He said, “Nepal has also proved that it can do transplantation.” The liver had been donated to patient Balaram Naga by his 42-year-old sister. The hospital has conducted the transplantation into Naga free of cost while it costs around Rs 6 million in a foreign country. The government had enacted Liver Transplantation Act only a week ago. However, the fee for liver transplantation has yet to be fixed. Preparations are underway to fix the liver transplantation fee at Rs 1.5 million to 2 million. The liver transplantation was successfully conducted in Nepal three months after Health Minister Gagan Thapa announced the plan for liver transplantation in Nepal.
